This competitive program identifies outstanding aspiring journalists who bring a variety of backgrounds to reporting on state government, policy, and politics. The States Newsroom Summer Reporting Fellowship is designed to attract candidates from a broad range of racial, ethnic, economic, age and geographical diversity, as well as candidates with disabilities.

Where can I intern? States Newsroom has outlets in 26 states and continues to grow. Placement is at the discretion of the States Newsroom leadership, and we will strive to place students in geographic regions close to the areas they live in. What are the duties? Practice fundamental news gathering skills, report news, and assist staff members. Duties vary in each department, and you will be paired with a mentor. 

What are the requirements? Students who are currently attending an accredited journalism or communication program and who have achieved junior or senior status as well as recent grads (May-December 2021) are eligible for consideration. Students majoring in journalism, broadcasting or communications are preferred; other majors will be considered. Participants must have good computer skills, excellent written & verbal communication abilities & knowledge of current events. A 3.0 GPA or above is recommended. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. 

Is this a paid position? Yes, States Newsroom provides each fellow with an hourly wage of $20/hour, and fellows are expected to work a 40-hour week. A small stipend for housing assistance may be considered.

Do I have to get college credit? States Newsroom does not require students to receive college credit. Students are solely responsible for coordinating and meeting the credit requirements of their college/university. 

When is the deadline? Applications must be received by Friday, April 15, 2022 at 11:59 p.m.

A committee will choose the fellows who will be notified by Friday, May 20, 2022, at 11:59 p.m.
