Shaufler Prize in Journalism - Recognizes the Best Journalism

Students please consider entering your work in the Shaufler Prize in Journalism, now in its third year.

The Shaufler Prize recognizes the best journalism in the country that advances the understanding of stories and issues related to underserved people in society, such as communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+, the disabled community and more. The emphasis is on great storytelling on any platform, be it print, digital, audio/radio or television.

The best entry from a student enrolled in an accredited journalism program in the U.S. receives a $5,000 prize. Other awards will be given in a category for professional journalists.

Last year, the top prize went to “Mega Billions: The Great Lottery Wealth Transfer,” produced by the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at the University of Maryland that explored how state lotteries intentionally sucked wealth out of poorer, often Black or Hispanic neighborhoods, transferring billions of dollars to multinational companies no longer based in the U.S.

The window for accepting entries is NOW OPEN, and the deadline to enter is midnight on Dec. 6, 2023. There is no entrance fee, and the application process is quick and easy.

Winners will be announced in early 2024.

The Shaufler Prize was established in 2021 at the Cronkite School by Paul B. Anderson, the principal & CEO of Workhouse Media of Seattle, Washington, in honor of his friend, Ed Shaufler, who cared deeply about promoting understanding of underrepresented people.

To enter, fill out the entry form and upload entries HERE. Entrants or their representatives need a Submittable account. You can create one or login to your existing Submittable account.
